Connecting with Nature on a Couch w/ Davide Barzaghi of Biosofa

Davide Barzaghi is the founder of Biosofa, a furniture workshop near Lake Como in northern Italy that makes non-toxic sofas from natural materials only. He trained in product design at Politecnico di Milano, worked on yacht interiors, and then came back to a family business that has made furniture for generations, with the goal of taking the plastic out of it.

Most of us have never asked what is inside the sofa we sit on every day. Davide did, and the answer was mostly petroleum: polyurethane foam, polyester and nylon fibers, and synthetic glues, layered and bonded so tightly that none of it can be separated or recycled at the end. He set out to build a sofa that could be repaired for decades and that, if it ever did end up in a landfill, would leave nothing behind.

We talk about how natural latex is made from the sap of the rubber tree and why it costs four to five times as much as foam, what certifications like OEKO-TEX and FSC actually guarantee and what they don't, why he trusts a supplier he can visit more than any label, and a kapok supply chain in Indonesia where every step is photographed and shared. He also talks about learning fish glue from his grandfather, why the harder argument was with his father's generation, and why Biosofa stopped selling through showrooms.
